Why do some countries rank higher than local salary surveys?

These averages blend local market pay with what international companies offer when they hire remotely. In countries where local pay is lower, international offers lift the average well above local surveys. India shows the widest gap, about five times the local job-posting average, and Poland moves ahead of Germany and the UK.

In Germany the effect runs the other way. The local market is already high, so the blend sits below datasets dominated by large tech employers.

For a company hiring from abroad, the blended figure is the more useful one: it describes what you are likely to pay, which is rarely what a local employer pays.

What does a senior software engineer cost to hire abroad?

Salary is the starting number. On top of it, an employer pays statutory social contributions, and they change the ranking. In 2026 they range from nothing in Armenia and 2% in Georgia to about 26% in Spain and 36% in Brazil for a senior engineer at the averages in this dataset.

What changes once contributions are added:

  • Denmark, 4th by salary, costs about the same as the UK: its contributions are fixed amounts.
  • The UK drops below Germany, Portugal and Spain: employer National Insurance starts only above £5,000.
  • Brazil's 36% narrows its gap with Kazakhstan to about $2,200 a year.

Statutory employer contributions for 2026. Switzerland shows federal contributions only. Health insurance, extra pensions and other benefits are not included and are often the largest addition in the US. Sources: national tax and social security authorities and PwC Worldwide Tax Summaries.

For a company without a local entity, there are two routes. The engineer can work as a contractor through a contractor-of-record, which Kleos charges at $50 or €50 per contractor. Or they can be employed through an employer of record, which Kleos charges from $200 per employee per month depending on country, with the employer contributions above on top.

Which route fits depends on how the work is run. A full-time engineer who works only for you, on your schedule, is likely to be treated as an employee in most countries. What happens when a contractor abroad becomes an employee covers that move in detail.
